Atopic dermatitis (Eczema)

Atopic dermatitis, better known as eczema, is a condition that makes your skin red, dry, irritated, and itchy. It’s common in children but can occur at any age. Atopic dermatitis is long lasting (chronic) and tends to flare periodically.

Our pharmacists can help by suggesting good habits to adopt to reduce the next break out and will prescribe, if conditions allow, a treatment to control your eczema.

Eligibility criteria and details

A pharmacist MAY prescribe a drug for the treatment of atopic dermatitis requiring the use of corticosteroids not exceeding a low to moderate potency if:

  • The patient has already been diagnosed by a healthcare professional qualified to prescribe.
  • A prescription for the condition has already been written.

The pharmacist MAY NOT prescribe a medication if:

  • More than 5 years have passed since the last prescribed treatment.

Unless there is clinical justification or a supply shortage, the pharmacist should normally re-prescribe the drug listed on the reference prescription. When prescribing a different drug, the pharmacist ensures that the drug prescribed is in a class of drugs of equal or lesser strength than the drug originally prescribed.

If more than 5 years have passed since the last prescribed treatment or if this condition has never been diagnosed, the pharmacist may still prescribe or recommend an over-the-counter medication if the patient's clinical situation or any other circumstance justifies it.
